Phototherapeutic apparatus
“Malysh”

Is developed within the framework of the innovative project

Phototherapeutic apparatus «Malysh» is intended for treatment of hyperbilirubinemia syndrome (jaundice) in newborn babies by applying the light of blue-green spectral region (superbright light-emitting diodes) at a body surface of baby corresponding to the long-wave slope of bilirubin absorption band.

The therapeutic effect is due to photoconversion of ZZ-bilirubin (which is in great amount in organism of infant with a syndrome of hyper-bilirubinemia) into photoisomers (lumirubin, Z,E-bilirubin, E,Z–bilirubin, E,E-bilirubin) whose rate of an egestion is higher than Z,Z-bilirubin.

The increase of phototherapeutic efficiency of jaundice with the use of radiation of essentially new light sources – superbright emitting-diodes – is due to:
•• a choice of spectral region in which shielding action of hemoglobin is lower than at use of broadband radiation of the lamps usually used for phototherapy;
•• increase (due to certain ratio of intensities of blue and green components in radiation of light-emitting diodes) of percentage among products of bilirubin photolysis – lumirubin, which rate of an egestion is the highest of all isomers.

Besides, the use of light-emitting radiation allows to exclude the side adverse effects inherent in lamp light sources and caused by the presence of intensive ultra-violet (fluorescent lamps) or infra-red (halogen lamps) components in emission spectrum.

Apparatus «Malysh» is intended for operation together with clinical incubator for nursing newborn babies in newborn departments of maternity hospitals, for nursing of prematurely born babies in maternity wards or versatile clinical hospitals, in pathological departments, intensive care departments and resuscitation departments of newborn babies. Apparatus «Malysh» is compatible with all known types of incubators for nursing prematurely born babies which are traditionally used for phototherapy.

Distinguishing features

The use of new type of radiation sources (light-emitting diodes) for development of apparatus «Malysh» allows to increase the efficiency of phototherapy, to exclude the side adverse effects inherent in lamp light sources. And, increase of therapeutic efficiency is due to the choice of spectral region providing the maximum concentration of lumirubin – a photoproduct of the bilirubin which is characterized by the highest rate of an egestion from an organism.

Apparatus «Malysh» on set of medico-technical parameters surpasses considerably corresponding characteristics of lamp analogues. Thus the average time between failures of a light-emitting diode practically exceeds the reliability of fluorescent lamps in 10 times and the reliability of halogen lamps in 300 times.

The absence of side adverse effects while using the apparatus «Malysh» is caused by absence of extraneous wavelengths in emission spectrum of light-emitting diode sources which are not corresponding to the absorption spectrum of bilirubin. As is known, as against apparatus «Malysh», either the intensive ultra-violet component (fluorescent lamps) or infra-red component (halogen lamps) are present in emission spectrum of lamp sources.

«Malysh» surpasses foreign therapeutic apparatuses created recently on the base of light-emitting diode in technical characteristics. In contrast to foreign analogs apparatus «Malysh» provides an opportunity of getting higher power density of radiation on the body surface of new-born child and its regulation. Spectral structure of working radiation is optimized to a greater extent. Specially developed optical construction allows to get uniform distribution of power density of light flow on the body surface of child. Specified differences provide higher therapeutic effect.
